If you are like me, you love flowers and the joy they bring when you receive them, look at them, smell them and surround yourself with their beauty.

As I was growing up, I have to say we didn’t grow a lot of flowers on our farm, except for the sunflowers in our garden.

We did have a row of lilac bushes at the side of our yard which gave off a heavenly scent. Also we would enjoy the wild flowers the grew in the fields and along the road side.

We would go on the hunt for lady slippers and Saskatchewan Tiger lilies, both of which are become more rare in the wild. Seen below is a wild Tiger Lily in Saskatchewan, near our family plot at the country cemetery.

We also used to find wild rose bushes and harvest the rose hips. I think that is what made me partial to wild flowers and country gardens. I haven’t seen lady slippers in the wild for a few years, but I will keep looking.

As I grew older I came to appreciate and learn about flowers more, but I never spent a whole lot of time studying the variety of species.

Best Dried Flowers

One thing I have learned over the years is that there are some flowers that last longer than others, and some that dry so well and retain their color years. I have always tried to dry bouquets I received and was amazed at how well some of the flowers lasted.

Here is a sample of these everlastings.

The bouquet below has the following flowers and the gorgeous color has lasted several years.

Purple Statice, Baby’s Breath and Mini Carnation

There are a couple of the flowers that are going to work well for drying and add some real interest to a dried flower bouquet.

The spikey ball stem in the middle is a Globe Thistle. Wow, so gorgeous and I am currently drying it for future bouquets. The Yellow Yarrow works well too and gives your bouquet that wildflower look.

I have updated the flower images below with a *Everlasting beside them if they are good for drying. Don’t forget to dry your flowers upside down for best results.

I am still learning about these and will post more samples as I can. In the meantime, here are a couple of Amazon books you might like on this topic:

Junco Nest!

We got a huge surprise one morning. We saw the birds fly in and out of our hanging basket. This tiny nest was inside one of our hanging baskets on the back deck. A family of Junco’s had decided to make it their home and next thing we know the nest was built and populated! The videos which follow shows the babies in the nest as they get bigger!

The video below shows them about 3 weeks later, almost ready to fly the coop!

Fortunately, we were away for a couple days when the babies were ready to fly out and our cat was locked in the house at that time! When we got home they were gone! A successful launch!

These Aubrieta are perennials and I can’t believe how they survived the winter! Just gorgeous.
