Hey there! The country style of decorating is so big right now. For those of us who grew up on a farm, we just love the hominess of the farmhouse style and the way it makes us feel, relaxed and comfortable, instead of overly pretentious. I have tried to incorporate some country touches in my country kitchen!
My husband and I recently renovated our house for sale and of course, our kitchen was a big part of that. I will write more about the renovation itself another time, but I wanted to show you some of the key elements that we used to transform it into a Country Kitchen.
After the renovation, the basics of a modern kitchen are all there, updated brand new white maple shaker style cupboards, gleaming granite counters, and stainless steel appliances. We also installed solid maple flooring and new paint and trim throughout. The large center island is a big centerpiece for the room with lots a space for family to gather around. Luckily with the white cupboards it will be easy to turn it into a white farmhouse kitchen.
A few elements of country style were added to the renovation, including the new French doors with ‘mullions’. As well you will see in the pictures below we added the mullions to some of the kitchen cabinets. We even created a large built-in china cabinet with mullions on the doors. We also added the country-style chandelier over the eating area. You will see these in the pictures that follow.
With a few added touches, the extra decor has ‘turned country’. I hope you like the result!
The Reveal
In this original photo, I had added candles on the silver candle pillars, the hydrangea flowers in a glass vase on a silver tray. This can be easily updated with country decor.
For the renovation we wanted a real timeless look, which can be dressed up or down. Gray and White is big right now, and I find it has a very calming effect on me.
After adding a few farmhouse touches below, the room has a more country feel.
The jug to the left in the picture beside, I purchased many moons ago.
The glass bird is a special Finnish design, Toikka by Iittala. I bought this vintage one at an antique store in Helsinki.
The white vase beside is Italian, but I bought it at an online Thrift store for dirt cheap
I love, love, love the white accents. The white farmhouse kitchen is starting to take shape!
Above, you can see I added the two country style lanterns, the wood serving tray, the weather vane and I kept the original flowers that I had on the island.
The floor rugs are hand-woven Finnish and Swedish design, but we always had these at home on the farm, so to me, they mean country farmhouse 🙂
On the far right counter above, you can see a blue tin vase, with more blue and white hydrangeas. I added a vintage salt and pepper shaker (chicken) that I just found at a 2nd hand store.

A few extra touches
Do you like the pig weathervane? I actually got this at Macy’s in Los Angeles on sale, again dirt cheap. The center piece also has a set of antique wooden spoons and a wooden grinder. I like adding the vintage farm accents.
For the table setting I tried to create a French Country look, with the cream plates, bowls, beige tin plate chargers, linen napkins, another cream-colored (Swedish) table runner. I included a silver tray in the center with a silver pillar candle holder and another weather vane. I also added an antique butter mold which I picked up at an antique store.
The chandelier is so country! I love the antiqued metal look. The clock on the wall is in French Country style from a local decor shop on Vancouver Island, BC. I also bought the plate chargers there. This helps to finish off the table setting.

For Christmas, I added a red and plaid checked table runner to the center island, and the christmas place mats, loving the country charm!
