Going Green with Vintage

Green has always been my favorite color. Maybe it was growing up on a farm where everything that grows is pretty much green to start with. I have always had a soft spot for anything green. Take this rooster for example. As soon as I saw it, sitting there outside in a free pile, at a local vintage seller’s house, I had to have it. The seller was downsizing her business and selling items out of her garage. I don’t know what she was thinking! I have been adding it to my green displays for quite a while since that original pick – definitely going green with vintage!

Anyway, going green is not just about loving the color, of course, but collecting green antiques and collectibles is another way to go green (reduce, recycle, reuse). I have been collecting vintage for years, never imagining that I would share them on a website during a pandemic. I also never envisioned the first year of my retirement would take me in this direction.

There are several items I have been lucky enough to receive, scrounge or gather over the years. These include items from my grandparents, my parents and things I rescued from our family farm on my trips back to Saskatchewan. Like these green skis, again another rescue…I think they were in an old granary on the farm and I asked my mom if I could have them. I bought the washboard, as I can’t remember what happened to ours on the farm.

The green telephone insulators are from our farm…My mom collected ink bottles and the green one was one of hers…I picked up the other green bottles recently at a local shop.

I have bought a few other green items lately to add to my green bias…anything to keep them out of the landfill is a good thing!

If you love vintage doilies, here’s one for you. Again another quick pick off a local seller…I have a couple of these in other colors that were my grandmother’s and my aunt’s, probably knit by them…I have been keeping my eye out for these. So much work goes into them and you just can’t buy them anymore.

I also seem to have a thing for old weigh scales…they are becoming pretty popular and of course I had to buy a green one (or two lol). But I could only fit one in my current display.

The recipe book beside it was my mother’s and after she passed recently I was happy to receive it. Again another treasure that you just don’t find anymore, hand made recipe covers for the front and the back.

I also had some vintage books with green jackets, so these got added to the display. I have a whole vintage book collection I will write about in another post.

Another item I have been watching out for are the vintage rolling pins. The one below was my grandmothers. She gave it to me for my ‘hope chest’ way way back. The green tenderizer mallet block I found on another recent vintage sale jaunt.

The oil painting above was passed down through my great aunt and my mother and is of the home farm on my mother’s father’s side in Finland. I love the wheat fields and dreamy quality…no wonder they chose Saskatchewan to settle.

I put together a green display just before St. Patrick’s Day…Yes, I know I am a bit late to post this, but I did have a photo up on my Instagram. Anyway, here are a few pictures before I take it down. We are in the process of purging and packing, before our big move end of April, to our ‘down-sized’ home for our retirement years.

Here is the full picture. The desk is a bit small for the display, but I didn’t want to not have a green display for St. Paddy’s day.
